Hazel Gilmore 'brought warmth to everything that she did'.

Hazel Gilmore, who represented the interests of Society members in Northern Ireland, has died after a short illness.

For close to three years she was the regional and professional officer for members in the province – the Society’s first dedicated officer for Northern Ireland. She also worked as a senior I radiographer at Lagan Valley Hospital in Lisburn.

“With more than 30 years’ working experience, Hazel was the ideal person to look after professional and industrial relations’ issues on behalf of the SoR in the six counties,” said Audrey Paterson, the organisation’s director of professional policy.

“She was the calm and clear voice of reason, a highly valued asset when dealing with the different personalities involved in healthcare.”

Much of Hazel’s time was spent trying to ensure that Agenda for Change was implemented fairly across all NHS trusts in the province, that radiographers were involved in the process and individuals were placed in the correct pay band based on skills, knowledge and experience.

At the time of her appointment in early 2007 she said, “Members here have felt they needed someone on hand to put forward their point of view and tackle local issues and I am looking forward to the challenge.”

Audrey Paterson commented: “Hazel represented the profession and individual members absolutely brilliantly and she went out of her way to help those in need. Radiographers, trades unionists and politicians will miss her quiet resolve and the warmth that she brought to everything that she did.”

Hazel recently celebrated her 33rd wedding anniversary with her husband, Wesley, and their three daughters, Laura, Caroline, and Louise.

The thoughts of everyone at the Society and in the profession are with Hazel’s family.

The funeral was held at 1.30pm on Tuesday 9 February at Ballynahinch Baptist Church. Donations in Hazel’s name to Macmillan Nurses are welcome.

LVH x-ray mourns the loss of a great colleague and dear friend

Hazel Gilmore passed away at the weekend after a short but hard fought illness. She worked in Lagan Valley x-ray department for over 30 years as a professional, caring, dedicated and highly valued member of staff.

In addition to this, because of her fantastic sense of humour, her vibrant, thoughtful and generous personality, she was very much loved by every member within the radiology department and throughout the whole hospital.

Hazel also worked enthusiastically for the Society of Radiographers as our Northern Ireland representative. This is a job in which she flourished and thoroughly enjoyed. Her service in this field was greatly appreciated throughout every hospital in the province and this was evident by the representation from all sites at her funeral on Tuesday 9 February.

Our deepest sympathy and love at this sad time is for her husband Wes, her three beautiful daughters, Laura, Carrie and Louise, her Mother and family circle. 

Hazel has left a huge gap in our lives. It has been an absolute privilege to have known and worked with such a special person.
