Terminology associated with sonographers, sonography education, and the ultrasound profession

Sonographers working in the United Kingdom come from many different professional backgrounds, there is a national shortage of sonographers. The sonography workforce is currently unregulated and the title ‘sonographer’ is not a legally protected one. 

New training and education routes, along with a complete career framework, are being developed by Health Education England in conjunction with a wide range of stakeholders. 

This document has been drafted  to provide an explanation of some of the terminology associated with sonographers, sonography education and the ultrasound profession.

It is hoped that it will assist members who may be involved with career framework and education pathway developments in this imaging modality.
