North East Lincolnshire’s former Mayor has raised thousands of pounds for patients on Grimsby Hospital’s breast unit, supporting imaging and diagnostic radiography.

Councillor Ian Lindley, operating department practitioner at Grimsby Theatres, was elected Mayor in 2023 – and chose the Pink Rose Suite as one of the charities to raise money for through the Health Tree Foundation.

Over the last year, Cllr Lindley has been part of fundraising events which garnered more than £5,000 overall – £4,000 of which will go to the breast unit.

Charity events

A charity race night at Swagger in Scartho raised £3,000 for The Pink Rose Suite.

Meanwhile a 24-hour dance-a-thon raised £2,000, with half going to the unit and half going to Sunflowers Children’s Action Group – the other charity Cllr Lindley was fundraising for.

He said: “The dancing challenge was particularly tough but it went really well. There were people popping down throughout it to support me, so a big thank you to everyone who came along.

“There were also a few charity nights and a Mayor’s Ball, which raised lots of money. The generosity of people has been overwhelming.”

‘It felt like a natural choice’

Wife of Cllr Lindley and former Mayoress, Helen Lindley, works in the Pink Rose Suite as an advanced nurse practitioner, which makes the unity “close to his heart”.

Their introduction came at a social event to raise money for the Suite.

Cllr Lindley added: “With us both working at the hospital and Helen working on the unit, it felt like a natural choice. The staff are fantastic and I see first-hand the terrific care patients get.

“Lots of people will have either been affected by breast cancer or know people who have. Many people will benefit from our efforts, as the donations will help the team purchase new equipment. Technology is constantly evolving so we need to be able to adapt.”

The Health Tree Foundation represents the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust charitable funds and associated charities.
