To help support the publication of the ECF, the society has collected stories from 24 radiography professionals across education

The SoR has gathered case studies from radiography professionals working across education to support its Education and Career Framework (ECF) for the radiography workforce.

As part of its ongoing work with NHS England, the SoR has gathered 24 case studies into a new online hub. The hub allows members to access the ECF and the case study library.

Case studies include academic case studies, practice educator case studies and service manager/service leader case studies. Over the next several weeks, SoR News will be publishing news stories on some of the career pathway case studies featured in the ECF.

The project was led by Kathryn Williamson, SoR professional officer for education and accreditation.

“It was always the College of Radiographers' intention to grow the case study offering within the ECF, providing both recognition to the great work being carried out by our members, and also to inspire and encourage others,” she said. “This is particularly true for educational roles within radiography as we have a growing need to recruit and encourage radiographers into this area of practice.

“Academics and practice educators play a vital role in the education and training of the future workforce, supporting growth, development and innovation across the profession. These are complex but rewarding roles which require both extensive clinical and educational expertise in addition to leadership, research and development capabilities.”

Funding from the NHS England Professional Body Education Reform Commission allowed the SoR to compile the case studies and create the case study library. The library was launched at the Achieving Excellence in Radiography Education and Research Conference in November.

What does the ECF do?

Released in November 2022, the most recent version of the ECF acts as a guide for radiographers by outlining the education and career development needed to progress in the profession. The latest version is available to read here

In addition to its main purpose, the ECF supports the College of Radiographers’ own programme approval process, accreditation schemes and much of the SoR | CoR’s other workstreams.

The ECF incorporates the four main pillars of practice - clinical expertise, education, leadership and management, and research and development. It is in the process of being updated to reflect the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) (Amendment) Regulations 2024, which came into effect on 1 October 2024.

The College of Radiographers is the charity subsidiary of the SoR, charged with the promotion of the science and practice of radiography for the benefit of the public.
