Radiographers in England and Wales now have a mandatory duty by law to report cases of female genital mutilation in girls under the age of 18.
Practitioners are obligated to report to the police, either verbally or in writing, if they encounter any physical signs of FGM, or if the patient says they have had FGM.
At present there is no legal obligation on professionals to report suspected FGM in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
