The WOW Show have released a new video as part of National Careers Week, which includes therapeutic radiographers talking about proton beam therapy.
It’s Your Future – NCW Special, explores 13-year-old Hassan’s treatment at the Christie in Manchester after a tumour was discovered in his neck. The radiography content starts at 5mins 27seconds into the video.
“The Christie is so good, it helped me so much and I met so many wonderful people,” Hassan says.
He talks with David Kirk, superintendent proton radiographer, who describes his role, his path to becoming a radiographer, and what proton radiotherapy is.
“Therapeutic radiographers need to be good at two things,” David says. “You need to have a very technical, scientific mind and you need to be able to care for people as well.”
“We have a close relationship with the nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, and we all work together to provide the care pathway for each patient and make sure their needs are attended to.”
Health Education England partnered with The WOW Show to give students and school advisors the opportunity to ‘explore the pathways to rewarding and fulfilling careers’ working as AHPs.
Students can visit the I See the Difference website and the NHS healthcare careers website and find out what career path they would like to take
Careers leads have also been encouraged to register for Inspiring the Future, which gives schools the opportunity to invite an AHP Ambassador to visit and help students deepen their understanding of career opportunities.
