A sonographer has been awarded multiple grants to support her research into improving clinical academic studies for radiographers.

Dr Ruth Reeve has been awarded funds to build a Wessex Radiographer Research Forum from NHS England South East.

She has also been awarded a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Senior Clinical Practitioner Award, worth over £400,000, which will enable Ruth to continue her post-doctoral research career, which includes improving radiographer/sonographer research.

'Essential to care'

Dr Reeve said: “Research is essential to improve patient care and outcomes by continuing to develop, grow and implement a high-quality evidence base that addresses key patient-focussed research priorities.”

Completing her PhD in 2023 as a clinical-academic fellow, Ruth is a strong advocate for supporting research in clinical environments and clinical-academic careers, where she now seeks to target the College of Radiographers research strategy aim: “To expand UK radiography research capacity through development of skilled and motivated research active profession.”

Research culture

Dr Ruth Reeve has begun her work in Wessex evaluating the current research culture, and is due to start her five-year NIHR award later this year whilst working in the ultrasound department in Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.

Ruth works closely with the NIHR Radiographer Incubator Hub, the College of Radiographers, the Council of Allied Health Professions Research and the British Medical Ultrasound Society to promote research within the radiography profession.
