Radiographers invited to share experiences in study on shift work and wellbeing

Participate in the next stage of the Diagnostic Radiographers at Work 24/7 study

Published: 09 December 2024 Researchers

Participants who completed the initial Diagnostic Radiographers at Work 24/7 survey can now share their experiences in one-on-one interviews to help shape strategies for a healthier and more sustainable diagnostic radiography workforce.

Jason Elliott, a lecturer in diagnostic radiography and imaging at Cardiff University, was awarded the College of Radiographer’s Doctoral Fellowship Grant in 2023 to support his research into the ways shift-working can impact radiographers.

The research project is the first of its kind and Jason hopes that findings can be used to develop strategies that will improve the wellbeing of the diagnostic radiography workforce and ensure the safe delivery of diagnostic services.

How you can get involved

His research is being conducted in two stages. The first stage took place earlier this year and involved a survey to explore the benefits and challenges associated with working rotational shifts. Potential advantages might include an improved work-life balance and skill development, and potential risks include burnout and an adverse effect on mental health.

The second phase which is currently underway, aims to build on the survey’s findings through one-on-one interviews. Participants who completed the initial survey are encouraged to sign up for an interview by 31 December 2024.

The interviews will take place between now and the end of January, and individuals will be asked to discuss their thoughts, feelings and experiences in context to the results found from the UK radiographer population.

About the Doctoral Fellowship Grant

Funded by the College of Radiographers and CoRIPs, the competitive grant provides up to £25,000 to eligible SoR members who are carrying out radiographic research in areas including accuracy and safety, technological innovations, public and patient experience, workforce transformation, and education and training.

In addition, successful candidates receive support to ensure calls for research participation reach as many people as possible and findings will be published in the peer-reviewed journal, Radiography. Individuals will also be awarded with a public address at a CoR conference too.

The CoR offer two grants per year, the deadline for submissions is Monday 7 April 2025. Learn more.
