Diagnostics guidance on ‘Point-of-care creatinine devices to assess kidney function before CT imaging with intravenous contrast’ has been published.
The NICE document offers evidence-based recommendations on how to improve current practice and for further research.
Recommendations include:
- Age, sex and ethnicity should be taken into account when assessing the risk of acute kidney injury using a questionnaire-based tool.
- Some devices should not be used to assess kidney function or guide decisions on whether to use intravenous contrast during an outpatient CT scan because there is insufficient data to assess diagnostic accuracy.
- Devices that calculate eGFR should assess kidney function to guide decisions on whether to use intravenous contrast during an outpatient scan in adults.
Society members were involved in the creation of the guidance.
