To mark this year's Remembrance Day (11 November), SoR president Tom Welton shares his message with Society members:
Each year 11 November brings focus on those who have lost their lives in conflict for our country and freedoms. We remember not only the atrocities of the two world wars, but also human sacrifice in wars such as the Falklands and Afghanistan. We should and will remember them to honour the cost of life in the name of liberty. We use today to highlight our solidarity with all lives lost but also the families these brave people have left behind. Reflecting on the past allows us to understand the security we see today in the UK and why our role in peace-making is crucial for a civilised world.
In recent years, the act of remembrance seems to have an increased level of meaning. With global unrest seemingly escalating, conflicts between Ukraine and Russia, across the Middle East and in Sudan are seeing increased bloodshed, and we must strive for peace. As a trade union but also as a leading professional body in healthcare, our stance should and will always be to preserve life.
My thoughts are also with the Radiography workforce (and the wider healthcare field) both in the UK and around the world assisting casualties of conflicts. Often working under high levels of stress and moral injury, we stand in solidarity with these professionals providing such critical roles.
