SoR members urged to respond to AHP Sustainable Healthcare survey

Members of the society are being asked to provide their input to help identify actionable sustainability interventions for radiography

AHP professional bodies and the Chief AHP Officer are collaborating to find out how each profession can reduce its carbon footprint, helping to focus activity where a difference can be made.

They are seeking input from allied health professionals (AHPs) from across the UK who see firsthand opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of healthcare.

The SoR is urging members to contribute their thoughts and opinions to the AHPs Priorities for Sustainable  Healthcare survey, helping to identify actionable sustainability interventions for the profession.

Moving towards sustainability

A spokesperson for the Chief AHP Officer said: “Every aspect of healthcare delivery, from the production and disposal of equipment used, to the energy used in the settings we work in, to the travel for our patients and staff, contributes to carbon emissions which in turn affects the health of people.”

But by reducing the impact of the healthcare industry on the natural environment and air pollution, the NHS can move towards a more sustainable healthcare system, they said. The NHS is responsible for around 5 per cent of all UK carbon emissions – more than shipping and aviation put together.

AHP staff and the general public have demonstrated “strong support” in tackling climate change, but AHPs must act now to reduce impact and deliver sustainable healthcare.

'A personal and professional priority'

Richard Evans, CEO of the SoR, said: “We know environmental sustainability is a personal and professional priority for SoR members, and we must ask the question – how are healthcare staff able to make a difference within their workplaces? It is essential to ensure the voices of radiographers are heard.”

The ‘Allied Health Professions Strategy for England: AHPs Deliver’ document emphasizes integrating net zero practices into all AHP work.

To contribute towards these efforts, fill in the survey online now before April 4.
