Heart Unions Week, an initiative developed by the TUC, is a campaign that celebrates the vital work of trade unions and workplace representatives in protecting employment rights, developing learning opportunities, and improving workplace safety.

Unions across England, Wales and Northern Ireland will use the campaign to raise their profile. Running from 10 to 16 February, this campaign provides an opportunity for SoR members to showcase the unique benefits that the Society of Radiographers offers – benefits that have been designed to serve the specific needs of the radiography workforce.

The value of SoR membership

As the only trade union and professional body dedicated exclusively to radiography, SoR provides workplace representation from those who understand the challenges faced by the profession. Members have access to expert support in both industrial relations and clinical practice, ensuring they receive informed guidance on employment issues and professional standards.

In addition to representation, SoR offers an extensive range of resources, including an online library of professional guidance, CPD webinars, and research publications. These resources help members stay up to date with policy developments, enhance their expertise, and meet HCPC requirements. The SoR also offers bursaries, research grants, and mentoring schemes to further support members in advancing their careers.

Beyond individual benefits, SoR fosters a strong professional community, bringing together radiographers through clinical special interest groups or student, new professional and manager networks. These platforms provide valuable opportunities to connect with peers, exchange best practices, and collaborate on shaping the future of the profession.

How to get involved

Heart Unions week is an opportunity for members to raise awareness of the benefits of SoR membership by engaging with colleagues and sharing information about the support available. Members can also take part in the campaign online by posting SoR Heart Unions assets on social media with the hashtag #HeartUnions and #JoinSoR.  Assets and other resources can be downloaded here.

For those looking to take a more active role, this week also serves as a reminder of the opportunities available to become an accredited SoR industrial relations, health and safety, or union learning representative. Taking on a representative role is a rewarding and impactful way to contribute to workplace improvements while developing valuable skills in leadership, negotiation, and communication that can also support long-term career progression. Members keen to learn more about becoming a SoR rep should contact their local workplace representative or visit sor.org/reps.

Heart Unions Week is a time to reflect on the impact of trade unions and the essential role they play in supporting professionals. It is also a chance to ensure that more radiographers are aware of the specialist representation, professional guidance, and career development opportunities that SoR provides.
