Delegates to the Society's Annual Conference in Leeds today voted to support a motion calling for the scrapping of parking charges for NHS staff in England.
The motion said that parking charges "can add up to a significant proportion of wages for many staff".
Conference hear that for many people, public transport was not feasible and that revenue from charges should not be used to "prop up services".
However one delegate opposed the motion on the grounds that it woould encourage car use and called for the greater use of public transport.
After hearing that the expansion of public transport was unlikely in the short term, delegates passed the motion.
