With government directives and initiatives on improving the public’s health, we as imaging and radiotherapy professionals, aspire to be at the heart of a healthier nation; however, it is often reported as a challenging area.

Public health refers to all organised measures to prevent disease, promote health, and prolong life among the whole population.  As healthcare professionals we can influence public health in the following ways:

Prevention: reducing the incidence of ill health supporting healthier lifestyle e.g. through screening programmes

Protection: surveillance and monitoring of infectious disease, emergency response and immunisation

Promotion: health education and commissioning services to meet specific health needs
