Please select one workshop to attend at 11:30 on 23 November. In this interactive workshop we will explore some of the key aspects of reviewing a paper, whether it is for CPD, researching a topic/project, or as part of peer review. We will cover tips and tricks, supporting tools that are available, and also insights from those who regularly review literature on how to get key messages from a paper efficiently and effectively, whilst also looking out for potential limitations or sources of bias.

Sharing Student Healthcare Initiative for Neurodiversity and Equity (SSHINE) is a student-led multi-disciplinary initiative founded by Ben Potts, a now newly qualified diagnostic radiographer, and Jade Wareham, an apprentice adult nurse. It has over 20 members, covering different nursing disciplines and 7 allied health professions. Using their own lived experience, the collective collaborate on resources intending to improve the support and experience of neurodivergent healthcare students. This session will introduce the movement of neurodiversity, providing the context and the foundational knowledge needed. It will discuss the barriers and obstacles faced by neurodivergent healthcare students, focusing on those in radiography. Finally, it will present SSHINE’s work in more detail, suggesting how it can be applied and used in practice-based radiography education.

This presentation centres on our pioneering approach to inclusive and innovative assessment within the BSc Diagnostic Radiography AP progression apprenticeship programme. Our assessment strategy embodies inclusivity, being meticulously designed with accessibility in mind. Apprentices are empowered with agency, granted the freedom to determine their preferred approach to submitting work for evaluation wherever this is pragmatic.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has seen step-change innovations in recent years, for example in large language models such as chatGPT and in deep learning algorithms. Companies have invested heavily in making these new systems widely available for little or no cost for small scale end users. The result of this is that students have access to tools that can generate content including text and images, as well as re-write existing material, for example paraphrasing or translating existing text. This poses a risk of academic malpractice in University assessments, with work being submitted that has not been done by the student. This issue is compounded by the fact that our existing malpractice detection tools such as TurnItIn, which search for similarities in text, are not going to be effective in detecting computer generated content. It remains unknown, and perhaps unlikely, that a technological solution to detect computer generated content will be developed in the foreseeable future. It is not possible or desirable to forbid the use of any AI by students. We must prepare students for practice where AI will be used routinely, so they can utilise AI effectively to benefit patients. On the other hand we must ensure that students meet the learning outcomes for our courses. This session explores the challenges to current assessments from AI and how our assessments must adapt to ensure fairness and rigour in an increasingly AI enabled world.

Diagnostic imaging practice has continued to evolve, with imaging central to the success of healthcare policy initiatives and priorities around health promotion and early disease detection. Delivery models of care have also morphed, responding to increased demand, advancing scopes of practice to streamline pathways, expedite patient care and improve patient outcomes. The harnessing of technology and artificial intelligence to support digital health initiatives and evolving practitioner roles is also changing the healthcare landscape. The 2023 revision to the HCPC Standards of Proficiency sets future expectations for diagnostic radiography graduate capabilities to support modern practices and flexible service delivery. This presentation will present the findings of NHS England Workforce Transformation and Education funded research on the stage by which standards would be expected to be met, how prepared radiographers and educators felt to support and assess students, and what would enable clinical placement sites to support and assess students to meet the standards.

Ultrasound Education: The Role of Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education (CASE) @ British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS)The following issues will be explored; the role of CASE committee and the challenges currently faced.@CASE's philosophy is to promote best ultrasound practice through the accreditation of those training programmes that develop safe and competent ultrasound practitioners. The majority of its activities relate to supporting those Institutions that offer, or wish to offer, courses leading to an award in Medical or Clinical Ultrasound. In addition to offering accreditation of new, and re-accreditation of established ultrasound education programmes, CASE undertakes annual monitoring of the courses it has accredited. The information obtained is fed back to the Institutions both on an individual basis and via the annual CASE report.@The role of BMUS will also be discussed bearing in mind each member organisation is unique and has its own obligations to its membership and its own agenda while CASE brings them together to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas in which shared views may be synthesised, and thus inform education and training programmes. The presentation will conclude by considering the future of ultrasound education and the potential roles of CASE and BMUS.

The NHS Long-Term Workforce Plan (2023) identified the need to modernise careers across the wide variety of skill mix found within the healthcare workforce, allowing highly skilled professionals to work to their fully trained potential and develop a clear career pathway with the aim to retain the workforce. Enhanced Practice is a defined level of clinical and professional practice, making a significant impact on patient care and clinical services, through workforce redesign.Using specific knowledge and skills within an enhanced scope of practice practitioners will make autonomous decisions within a defined area of practice, mitigating and managing risk to the patient, themselves and others, and the organisation. In many professions, like radiography, this level of practice is nothing new, but this newfound awareness allows for further education and training development of the workforce.

Radiography has been a graduate profession for over 30 years, the first degree programme in the UK being approved in 1989. Currently there are 33 higher education institutions offering 62 diagnostic and 25 therapeutic pre-registration programmes which are approved by the HCPC.The growth in the number and breadth of the options available may have an altruistic aim to providing widening participation to support and meet the demand of the radiography workforce yet it has not come without its challenges. A finite pool of applicants, increased pressures on clinical department, ‘sharing’ of placements, and increased competition between providers are a few of the issues that are being faced. The aim of this workshop is to explore ways in which we can address such issues by offering a chance to discuss four key themes: why do we need new provision and providers, how do we work collaboratively, what is the best way to share resources and what might be the effect of increasing provision?
