£140m fund to promote AI for screening and diagnosis

An award to develop the artificial intelligence (AI) technologies of the future has been announced by NHS England.

£140m over three years is available to accelerate the testing and evaluation of the most promising AI solutions which meet the strategic aims set out in the NHS Long Term Plan.

The Artificial Intelligence in Health and Care Award will support technologies in four areas: screening, diagnosis, decision support, and improving system efficiency.

A call for applications for the Award will run through an open competition to identify appropriate AI technologies for support into the NHS. 

The technologies may have a variety of applications in health and social care, such as:

Health promotion and prevention
National screening programmes
Preventative advice
Self-management
Digital epidemiology and disease surveillance

Diagnosis and treatment
Symptoms checkers and decision support for differential diagnosis
Risk stratification
Prediction of deterioration
Personalised treatments

System efficiency
Optimisation of care pathways
Identification of resource requirements
Electronic roster system
Natural language processing for administrative tasks
